What’s new:
The new threat from
McLaren for the 2023 Formula 1 season has been unveiled. The MCL60 is the name
of the squad, which honors Bruce McLaren's foundation of the organization in
1963, which occurred 60 years ago.
In advance of the 2023 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, the McLaren Formula 1 Team presented the team's new driver lineup in front of supporters and international media members at the OKX Thought Leadership Centre at McLaren's HQ in Woking.
Following Andrea
Stella's promotion to F1 Team Principal and the beginning of a new chapter, the
team will kick off its 60th Anniversary celebrations by inviting rookie driver
and 2021 FIA Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri to race the MCL60 alongside
promising Brit Lando Norris.
Lando, a 23-year-old
Englishman from Somerset, begins his fifth Formula 1 season with McLaren after
finishing third for the sixth time in his F1 career in the 2022 Emilia Romagna
Grand Prix. Oscar, a 21-year-old Australian from Melbourne, joins the squad
after winning the FIA Formula 3 and FIA Formula 2 championships in back-to-back
years in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
The team's 2023 rival
will be called the MCL60, breaking with the prior naming convention, to honor
McLaren's milestone year. Bruce McLaren, a racing driver from New Zealand,
established McLaren Racing in 1963. Since then, the company has won 183 Formula
1 races, the Indianapolis 500 three times, the Le Mans 24 Hours on its debut,
20 Formula 1 World Championships, and 20 Formula 1 Grand Prix.
The papaya orange and
blue livery of the MCL60, which the team first used in the 1960s, has
subsequently been a favorite among the squad since their comeback in 2018.
Before the 2023
Bahrain Grand Prix on March 5, Lando and Oscar will make the MCL60's formal
on-track début during the preseason test at the Bahrain International Circuit
on February 23.
Zak Brown, CEO, of McLaren Racing,
said:
“We are
delighted to launch our 2023 Formula 1 team with Lando and Oscar at the wheel
as we celebrate 60 years of McLaren Racing. This year’s driver line-up is
extremely exciting as Lando, an intelligent and confident driver with excellent
pace, is joined by one of the biggest up-and-coming talents in motorsport with
Oscar.
Andrea Stella, Team Principal, McLaren Formula 1, said:
“It’s an honor to lead McLaren Racing into the team’s 60th anniversary season. We have a committed and talented group of people at McLaren, and we are all looking forward to taking the MCL60 racing, after the hard work and efforts over the last months, in all areas of the team
Lando Norris, Driver, of McLaren Formula 1, said:
“The off-season has been good but I'm looking forward to getting
back on track and behind the wheel of the MCL60 for the first time. The new car
looks great, and everyone involved in the build has played an important role.
Oscar Piastri, Driver, McLaren Formula 1, said:
“I’m delighted to get started with McLaren and make my F1 debut
this season. The off-season has been great for me, and I’ve been working hard
to prepare for the upcoming year. The time I’ve spent at the factory and in the
sim has been enjoyable and productive, and everyone on the team has been
welcoming. I’ve settled in well and I’m now fully focused on getting out on
track in Bahrain.
